Environmentally sustainable design for SA's environment department's CBD building
The South Australian Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) is helping make Adelaide carbon neutral with the environmentally sustainable design of their new CBD office.
The major refurbishment is registered for a 6 Star Green Stars Interiors Certified rating, the highest rating possible, signifying World Leadership in sustainable workplace fitout.
The fitout has a 5 Star NABERS Energy rating, with expected annual greenhouse gas emissions of 568 tons, a 45% reduction compared to standard practice. It also has a 5 Star NABERS Water rating, with predicted annual water consumption of 3,100kL, a 51% water reduction compared to standard practice that represents a water saving equivalent to 80 domestic swimming pools per year.
There was a strong focus on sustainability during the construction stage and construction waste was minimised with 90.4% diverted from landfill for recycling. A “whole of life” approach was also taken to the fitout and selection of furniture and workstations, with priority given to items with a low embodied carbon footprint. As a result, the whole of life carbon footprint is 35% lower than a standard fitout.
DEWNR also accepted a number of “Innovation Challenges” designed to establish new benchmarks in sustainability in buildings.
