What Thomson Rossi is doing to reduce carbon emissions

Thomson Rossi is committed to the principle of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) and actively pursues opportunities to deliver buildings at the cutting edge of sustainable design. Thomson Rossi has a unique opportunity as architects to influence sustainable outcomes in an industry that contributes significantly to the use of natural resources and the ability of the environment to support this continued use.

Thomson Rossi’s influence goes far beyond the impact of particular designs or buildings, with the potential for far reaching social change in understanding the relationship between people and the environment. The road to sustainability encompasses a range of issues that are much wider than the design of specific building elements or the selection of materials, instead going to the root of decisions to build a new facility or to refurbish existing stock. Thomson Rossi are actively involved in a range of ESD decisions.

As an indication of commitment to ESD, Thomson Rossi’s commercial office and studio conversion in Adelaide achieved a 5.5 NABERS Energy Rating (6 = Market Leading Performance). This led to a CitySwitch 2012 Signatory of the Year for South Australia Award from the Adelaide City Council and a Cityswitch Signatory of the Year SA in the Cityswitch National Awards in 2013. Improvements are ongoing, with renewable energy targets driving the installation of a 30kW solar photovoltaic system to generate renewable energy on-site with a flat screen visual display of real-time solar production, as well as building energy and water consumption. An Aquion Battery Stack clean energy storage system has also been installed with clean saltwater battery technology which attains the only Cradle to Cradle Certification for batteries currently on the market.
