Shoal’s vision is to improve the world as a result of tackling the most complex problems. This mission inspired their team to investigate ways they could apply systems thinking methodologies across a range of areas, one being environmental custodianship. The outcome of this is carbon neutral certification. They continue to pursue avenues and activities to improve their environmental position, applying their expertise in systems thinking.
In 2021, Shoal became the first systems engineering firm to be certified Carbon Neutral by Climate Active, joining 250 Australian organisations that have proven that they are measuring, reducing and offsetting their emissions, with a net result of zero emissions. Their journey towards certification began in 2019, inspired by their team’s discussion at an Ideas Club session. By 2020, they had measured their carbon footprint and were well on their way to gain certification through Climate Active.
Shoal’s journey continues, with ideas and accountability measures to ensure they incorporate consideration of their impact on the environment into their decision making. They have made choices and changes in the way they do business to reduce their carbon emissions as much as possible. They then purchase carbon offsets to take responsibility for unavoidable emissions and become carbon neutral.
