Why ICLEI Oceania is supporting Carbon Neutral Adelaide

ICLEI Oceania: local governments for sustainability have been working with the City of Adelaide for nearly 20 years supporting efforts to reduce greenhouse emissions. First through the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) campaign and more recently through the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. Carbon Neutral Adelaide are demonstrating global leadership while at the same time working with the community, other councils, State Government to help us all meet international  commitments. ICLEI will continue to support and promote Carbon Neutral Adelaide as an exemplar of how a progressive City can make a meaningful global impact while working on the practicalities of supporting residents, businesses and the community to make low carbon choices and prepare effective climate action plans.

What ICLEI Oceania is doing to reduce carbon emissions

ICLEI Oceania: local governments for sustainability are a founding partner of the Compact of Mayors, part of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, which are supporting large and small cities to commit to climate action. This initiative supports committed councils to measure and understand their greenhouse emissions and climate risk, to set low carbon targets and to develop comprehensive climate strategies and action plans to meet targets and to respond to a changing climate.

Over 650 cities are part of the Compact of Mayors joining with 7100 EU based Covenant of Mayors councils who have committed to joining and sharing approaches with their community and with other municipalities publicly and transparently. Adelaide is part of the Compact of Mayors and ICLEI support other South Australian councils to also be involved.
