Hither & Yon is the first winery in South Australia to be certified carbon neutral, by Climate Active, the Australian Government’s program for voluntary action on climate change. They seek to make better wines with a lighter footprint and feel the most important parts of this are the soil, people and community. The company is proud to be part of a state and city which respects our local environment, leading the transition to a low carbon economy, and encouraging partnerships and awareness to make this a healthy and green place to work and live in.
Hither & Yon embeds the full circle cycle of carbon management in its culture, organisation and product, starting with regenerative agriculture on its land and vineyard, livestock breeding and gracing, then onto sustainable winegrowing, and finally into carbon neutral wine. Their key principles on land are carbon building and sequestration in our soil, organic and compost matter mineralisation, biodiverse native grasses and tree planting, and selection of climate appropriate grape varieties.
From an organisation level, Hither & Yon focuses on renewable energy production and use, responsible and responsive water use and management, minimising vehicle emissions and office recycling program. Through staff involvement and training, the winery is always seeking better ways of growing, managing and making. Employing the services of a carbon consultants to regularly measure carbon emissions helps to highlight areas of strength and improvement. From a wine perspective, the winery seeks recycled and natural materials for supply chain, and takes a ‘hands off and lo-fi’ approach to winemaking, and also reduces travel and freight as much as possible. By listening to customers and trends in the marketplace, Hither & Yon are creating an ever-evolving loop towards eco-friendly wine.
