Glaciem Cooling’s range of environmentally sustainable refrigeration solutions tackles issues that contribute to climate change.

Why Glaciem Cooling is supporting Carbon Neutral Adelaide

Glaciem Cooling believes that Carbon Neutral Adelaide provides the ideal platform to demonstrate what government and business can achieve through working together. As a provider of innovative refrigeration solutions, Glaciem Cooling knows that refrigeration is a vital component in the supply chain of many businesses operating in the Adelaide CBD.  Working together with Carbon Neutral Adelaide, Glaciem Cooling aims to help businesses transition away from traditional refrigeration systems that are not only energy intensive but also use man made synthetic refrigerants which significantly add to global warming if leaked into the atmosphere. Providing energy efficient, environmentally sustainable alternatives, Glaciem Cooling helps mitigate the risk of climate change and a volatile energy market. Being part of Carbon Neutral Adelaide enables Glaciem Cooling to help show the world Adelaide is truly a city of the future.

What Glaciem Cooling is doing to reduce carbon emissions

Refrigeration and air conditioning is a vital industry at the heart of all modern economies. Used in the food, wine, dairy and beverage sectors, refrigeration underpins sectors that make up a large part of South Australia’s economy. However, the increased use of refrigeration and air conditioning has a substantial effect on the environment. Making things cold is extremely energy intensive. The refrigeration and air conditioning sector consumes about 20% of all electricity produced in Australia and produces 11% of the total annual greenhouse gas emissions. Synthetic refrigerants also contribute to global warming due to their high Global Warming Potential (GWP) and are being phased out worldwide under the Kigali agreement.

Glaciem Cooling’s range of environmentally sustainable refrigeration solutions tackles these issues. The Thermcold Ice Battery systems are powered by award winning Phase Change Materials developed by the University of South Australia and allow users to store excess electrical energy generated by Solar PV to be stored as thermal energy that can be used during peak electrical times.  The system also has the ability to run at high efficiency during the night making ice for use during less optimum times. The cool energy from this ice is then extracted efficiently via Glaciem’s Dynamic Melt technology. In addition, the high efficiency CO2LCARBON system uses CO2 as a working refrigerant eliminating the need for environmentally damaging man made synthetic refrigerants. When combined, these systems have the potential to reduce direct/indirect CO2 emissions by over 70%.
