The Buddy Ohm service is an affordable, easy, energy management and monitoring service that aims to help organisations better manage energy consumption and associated carbon emissions.
What Buddy Platform is doing to reduce carbon emissions
Buildings represent a third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, consuming enormous amounts of energy and water on a daily basis. In Adelaide, 48% of the city’s carbon emissions are related to the energy consumed in buildings. Buddy Platform uses the Buddy Ohm service to actively measure, monitor and reduce real-time energy consumption – helping organisations understand and then reduce carbon emissions.
In Buddy Platform’s Adelaide office, the Buddy Ohm service helps the team understand how the office uses energy throughout the day and working week – “making the invisible, visible”. With this understanding, Buddy Platform has been able to make immediate changes including:
- adjusting the office HVAC system to maximise the benefits of Adelaide’s temperate climate by using the fresh air cycle rather than air conditioning for most of the year
- increasing the temperature in the server room from 19 to 23 degrees which is adequate to maintain IT systems in security and comfort
- encouraging behaviour change by sharing updates at team meetings and displaying the energy consumption data in real time to remind people to turn lights and appliances off
- working with cleaning and security staff to ensure energy savings procedures are followed.
Buddy Platform is currently working on a business case to replace the lighting system with energy efficiency lighting, as well as upgrades to computing and technical equipment. Moving towards a green energy tariff is also being explored, along with using video teleconferencing to reduce air travel by 25%. In early 2018 Buddy Platform will publish carbon emissions and outline a plan to become carbon neutral by 2019.
