With a mission to see "More People Cycling in South Australia", Bike SA promotes the diverse, community-wide benefits that result from increased rates of active mobility.
Transport presently causes 27% of carbon emissions in the City of Adelaide, therefore every car trip replaced by a bicycle can make a measurable difference.
Through work on the World Cycling Alliance, Bike SA subscribes to the values of the Sustainable Development Goals and see bicycles delivering on these global objectives, particularly in relation to Goal 13 – "Urgent action to combat climate change."
Joining Carbon Neutral Adelaide is a first step for Bike SA in formalising how it seeks to treat carbon emissions, as they relate directly to the daily operations of the organisation.
To date, actions have seen the commencement of LED lighting upgrades as well as behavioural considerations with the use of air conditioning and other high energy-use equipment. An investigation into the potential for solar panels to be installed is being undertaken.
Key areas of interest are the carbon emissions created by Bike SA community events, which by their very nature require significant motor/utility vehicle use.
More broadly, Bike SA are keen to engage in policy discussions around bicycle related carbon reduction strategies through increased community based transportation modes and a shift away from privately owned motor vehicles and commercial utility vehicles.
